From the Maasai Mara’s migration plains and Amboseli’s elephant country to the beaches of Mombasa, Diani and Watamu, almost every Kenya journey begins at an airport. A well-organised private transfer connects your flight to your first hotel, lodge or onward safari flight.

Whether you land at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, connect through Wilson Airport for a bush flight or arrive at Moi International Airport in Mombasa, arranging a driver and the right vehicle in advance removes uncertainty around traffic, luggage and late-night arrivals.

Common transfer routes

These are approximate journey times, not guaranteed schedules. Traffic, weather, your destination and vehicle availability affect your transfer.

  • JKIA to Nairobi CBD: typically 25–60 minutes.
  • JKIA to City Market, downtown: approximately 18 km and 33 minutes in the supplied guide.
  • JKIA to Karen: about 45 minutes.
  • JKIA to Wilson Airport: approximately 18 km by road; leave a generous connection buffer.
  • JKIA to Lake Naivasha: about 2 hours 30 minutes.
  • Moi International Airport to Mombasa city centre: around 55 minutes.

Kenya’s airports at a glance

  • Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA / NBO): Nairobi’s main international gateway and the arrival point for most long-haul flights.
  • Wilson Airport (WIL): Nairobi’s domestic and light-aircraft hub for scheduled bush flights to destinations such as the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu. Confirm your departure airport with your airline.
  • Moi International Airport (MBA): Mombasa’s international and domestic airport, serving the Kenyan coast.
  • Kisumu International Airport (KIS): gateway to western Kenya and Lake Victoria.
  • Malindi Airport (MYD): a coastal airport serving Malindi and nearby Watamu.
  • Eldoret International Airport: a regional airport for the Rift Valley highlands.

JKIA terminals and meeting your driver

JKIA has Terminal 1, divided into concourses 1A–1E, and a separate Terminal 2. Terminal allocations can change: check your airline ticket and current airport information.

After immigration, baggage collection and customs, follow the meeting point in your booking confirmation. Pre-booked drivers wait with name boards in or near the public arrivals area; at Terminal 1A this may be the covered area outside the exit doors.

Do not follow unsolicited taxi offers. If your flight is delayed or you cannot locate your driver, call or WhatsApp the contact provided in advance and remain in the agreed public meeting area.

  • Terminal 1A: main international terminal for Kenya Airways and SkyTeam partners.
  • Terminals 1B and 1C: other international airlines.
  • Terminal 1D: domestic flights, including Kenya Airways domestic and Jambojet.
  • Terminal 1E: international arrivals not served at 1A; redevelopment proposals may change its use.
  • Terminal 2: low-cost and some regional carriers.

Travel times and the Nairobi Expressway

The main routes from JKIA are the surface route along Mombasa Road and the elevated Nairobi Expressway. Off-peak, the Expressway can bring the journey to the CBD or Westlands to around 15–30 minutes.

During weekday rush hours, roughly 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–20:00, the surface road can take 45–90 minutes. The Expressway offers a more predictable option for tight connections, but always leave extra time for a connecting or bush flight.

Confirm which route your provider will use and whether Expressway access forms part of the arranged transfer.

Transfer options compared

  • Pre-booked private transfer: a reserved vehicle, meet-and-greet and flight tracking offer a predictable choice for first-time visitors, families, late arrivals and Wilson connections.
  • Official airport taxi desk: convenient for immediate departure when you have not booked ahead. Confirm the vehicle and journey arrangements before setting off.
  • Uber and Bolt: widely used app-based options. Follow the in-app pickup instructions, which may require a short walk. Unlike a pre-booked driver, an app booking does not track your inbound flight.
  • Public bus or matatu: slower journeys of about 40–90 minutes, crowded conditions and difficult luggage handling make them unsuitable for most late arrivals.
  • SGR train via Syokimau: useful for longer Nairobi–Mombasa travel but requires an additional road transfer from the station and is not practical for most hotel drop-offs.

Your arrival with Whitan Safaris

We arrange private airport transfers as the first step of the journeys we design. From JKIA to a Kenya safari, from Nairobi to a Wilson bush flight, or from a coastal airport to your beach holiday, your arrival receives the same care as the rest of your itinerary.

Our service includes flight monitoring, a professional driver waiting with your name board and a smooth handover into the rest of your safari or beach holiday. We believe the quality of your arrival sets the tone for your experience, with comfort and care from the moment you land.

How to arrange your transfer in six steps

  • 1. Confirm your airport and terminal: JKIA, Wilson or your coastal arrival airport.
  • 2. Choose a vehicle with enough seats and luggage space. Tell us about large bags, children and any accessibility needs.
  • 3. Confirm the route, waiting allowance, meeting point and cancellation arrangements. Book earlier during the July–October peak season.
  • 4. Supply your flight number so your driver can track delays or early arrivals.
  • 5. Save your confirmation and driver’s phone or WhatsApp number offline, not only in email.
  • 6. Follow the written meeting instructions after immigration and baggage collection, and check the name sign before entering the vehicle.

What to confirm before travelling

  • Meet-and-greet with a name board and flight monitoring.
  • Your waiting allowance: the supplied guide describes 45–60 minutes as typical, but providers differ on when it starts. Confirm your booking’s exact terms.
  • Luggage assistance and an air-conditioned vehicle of the reserved class.
  • Whether the driver will use the Expressway.
  • Child seats requested ahead and your provider’s cancellation window; general market policies are not a substitute for your confirmed booking terms.

Safety and licensing

  • Choose NTSA-licensed drivers and companies using clearly identifiable vehicles and current insurance.
  • Avoid unsolicited taxi offers inside the terminal. Stay in the agreed public arrivals area until your driver appears.
  • For night arrivals or travel with children, arrange a known driver and vehicle ahead of time.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the drive from JKIA to central Nairobi? Allow 25–60 minutes for roughly 15–18 km in normal traffic. Rush hour can take longer, so leave a buffer for connections.

Where will my driver meet me? Follow your confirmation’s exact public arrivals meeting point after customs. Your driver will hold a board with your name.

Do Uber and Bolt work at JKIA? Both are reported to operate at JKIA. Follow their current in-app pickup instructions and arrange mobile data.

Do I need a visa or eTA? Kenya replaced traditional visas with Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) in January 2024. Check current eligibility and exemptions on the official eTA portal before travelling. The supplied guide advises a passport valid for at least six months with one blank page, and allowing about three working days for processing.

How do I reach Wilson Airport for a Maasai Mara flight? Arrange a private transfer or taxi for the approximately 18 km road journey. Confirm your airline’s check-in cut-off and consider an overnight in Nairobi if the connection is tight.

Can I pay in cash or by card? Providers may accept KES or USD cash, M-Pesa, bank transfer or card. Confirm the accepted method when booking.

Should I tip my driver? Tipping for good service is appreciated but not compulsory.
