Arriving after a long-haul flight without a reliable ride can make the start of a Uganda safari stressful. Whether you are heading to Kampala, settling into a lakeside lodge in Entebbe, or continuing straight to the national parks, a smooth transfer makes all the difference. This guide covers your arrival and onward journey in 2026/27.
Entebbe sits on the shore of Lake Victoria, roughly 45 km from Kampala by road. It is Uganda’s main international gateway and handled 2,486,893 international passengers in 2025, according to the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA).
Your first hour at Entebbe Airport
Clear immigration and collect your bags before entering the arrivals hall. Arrange your approved Uganda eVisa online before flying; visas on arrival are no longer issued as a general rule. Print the approval letter and keep it with your passport.
The supplied guide cites a 2 October 2026 National Citizenship and Immigration Control notice stating that a yellow fever certificate is no longer a mandatory condition of entry. Vaccination remains recommended, and your airline or transit country may still require the certificate. Carry it if you have one and confirm current entry requirements with Uganda’s immigration authorities and your airline before departure.
Arrivals facilities include forex bureaus, ATMs accepting major cards, and MTN and Airtel SIM counters. A local SIM with data helps you contact your driver, use maps and set up mobile money. Keep your driver’s contact details and hotel address accessible offline.
Entebbe Airport is undergoing upgrades, with UCAA commissioning a new 20,000 m² terminal in phases beginning in January 2026. Meeting points can change during construction, so confirm the exact pickup location in advance.
Pre-booked private transfers with Whitan Safaris
Send us your flight details before you travel. Our driver meets you in arrivals with your name on a board, with the vehicle confirmed and your hotel or lodge already known. This is especially practical for first-time visitors and evening or early-morning arrivals.
We monitor your flight and adjust the pickup if you land late. When your transfer forms part of a safari with us, the same team can continue with you into the parks, connecting your arrival to your first game drive.
Other transfer options
- Official airport taxis: use the designated airport taxi rank. Vehicles are marked with a yellow band and “AIRPORT TAXI.” They provide door-to-door transport when you have not pre-booked.
- Bolt and SafeCar by SafeBoda: practical app-based car services with tracking. Install your chosen app before travel and use a local SIM or reliable airport Wi-Fi. Availability is generally better during the day and can be thinner late at night.
- Hotel shuttles: many Entebbe hotels arrange pickups. Entebbe centre is about ten minutes from the airport. Confirm the meeting point and driver information when booking your room.
- Shared minibuses (matatus): connect from near the airport to Entebbe town and onward to Kampala. They can be crowded, slower and difficult with luggage or children, and are not ideal for first-time visitors arriving after dark.
Drive times to Kampala and the Entebbe Expressway
The airport-to-Kampala journey is about 40–46 km, depending on your destination. Allow 45–90 minutes in normal traffic. The old Entebbe Road becomes congested in the evening rush; the four-lane Kampala–Entebbe Expressway offers a smoother, more predictable alternative.
For late arrivals, staying in Entebbe allows you to rest near the airport and begin your safari the following morning without battling Kampala traffic.
Beyond Kampala: national parks and Jinja
Road conditions, weather and stops affect these approximate driving times. Longer itineraries may break the journey or include a flight for the final leg. Confirm the schedule with your safari operator.
- Jinja: about 2–3 hours.
- Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park: about 6 hours.
- Bwindi and Mgahinga: about 9–11 hours for gorilla trekking. An overnight near the airport is recommended after a late landing.
Practical things to have ready
- Printed eVisa approval and a passport valid for at least six months.
- Some local cash and a Visa or Mastercard for ATMs.
- An MTN or Airtel SIM with data for maps and contacting your driver.
- Your hotel address written on paper and your driver’s name and phone number saved offline.
- Bolt installed and payment arranged before travel if you plan to use the app.
